1. Am I eligible to vote absentee?

If you are registered to vote in Shelby County or Chilton County and meet one of the above requirements, then you are eligible.
If you are not registered to vote in Shelby County or Chilton County, you will need to contact the Board of Registrars at (205) 669-3913 to register or Chilton County Board of Registrars at (205) 755-3820.

2. How do I apply for an absentee ballot?

3. Can I vote absentee in person?

Yes, you can come by the City Clerk’s office Monday through Friday 8:00AM – 5:00PM (except on holidays) and make application and vote while you are in the office. The address is 10947 Highway 25, Calera, Alabama 35040

4. Where do I mail the application?

The application must be mailed to: Connie B. Payton, City Clerk, 10947 Highway 25, Calera, AL 35040. By law ( AG Opinion 82-551), each application must be mailed in a separate envelope. Multiple applications (even for husband and wife) which are mailed in the same envelope will be returned to the voter. Applications cannot be faxed in.

5. If I am voting absentee by mail, when do I send in the copy of my ID?

After you make application, you will receive your ballot and supplies. You will need to send a copy of your ID at that time. Please read your instructions carefully as to how it is to be returned. Do not seal up your ID in either one of the white envelopes. Your ID should be placed inside the brown return envelope.

1. When are municipal elections held?

Municipal elections are held every four years. The next election will take place on August 2020.

2. What are the hours of operation for City Hall?

The Calera City Hall is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Please check the City Holidays for schedules.

3. How is garbage collection handled on holidays?

If collection day falls on a holiday, collection will be done on the following business day. For example, on a Tuesday holiday, Monday collection will be done on Monday, Tuesday will be done on Wednesday, and other garbage pick-ups will be on schedule for the rest of the week. Operating hours for the Public Works Department is Monday through Friday from 6:00 am to 2:30 pm.

4. What are the disconnect procedures for utility bills?

Disconnects are processed Monday at 5:00 p.m. before the second Tuesday of each month. An administrative fee of $50.00 will be charged to any delinquent account at that time. Accounts with a previous balance will be disconnected the second Tuesday of the month beginning at 6:30 a.m.

Account must be paid in full by cash or credit card by 2:00 p.m. for same day restoration if disconnected for non-payment or return item.

5. Payment methods for utility payments?

Bank Drafts – Save you time and the convenience fee.

You can have your utility payment drafted each month. Bills are drafted on the 25th or the next working day. There is no convenience fee for Bank Drafts.

Drop Box:

A drop box is located in the City Hall parking lot for customers who prefer to drop off your payment. If you choose to use the drop box, please remember any payments placed in the drop box after 4:30 p.m. will not be processed until the next working day.

Kiosk Payments:

Did you know you can make your utility payments 24 hours a day at our payment kiosk? The kiosk allows you to use a credit card, debit card, check or money order to make your payment. It is located at City Hall on Highway 31, to the left of the front entrance.  

Online Payments:

Register to view your account online and you will have access to your utility account 24 hours a day where you can submit a service request, make a payment arrangement or pay your utility bill. To pay your utility account online, you will pay a convenience fee of $1.25.

Pay by Phone:

Beginning November 1, 2018 you will call our toll free number 833-326-7017 to make your utility payment by using your debit or credit card. Please note the Utility Department will no longer accept payments over the phone, you must use the toll free number. To pay your utility bill by telephone, you will pay a convenience fee of $1.25.

If you call city hall at 205-668-3500, you should press option 2 to pay by phone. You will need your account number and street address to make your payment; you will pay a convenience fee of $1.25.

1. Where does the city get its operating monies?

Sales taxes revenues represent approximately 48% and property taxes 12% of the total income for the general fund. Other revenues come from fees and charges for services provided by the city to its citizens.

2. Is the Water Department a part of the city?

Yes and no. The Water Department is a separate legal entity with its own board of directors and management team. The rates are set by the Water Works Board. However, because the City of Calera is also responsible for the ultimate financial condition of the water system, it is considered a “component” of the city. The Water Department has its own annual financial audit.

1. Do I need a permit to burn trash or debris?

If you live in the incorporated City limits of Calera, you need a burn permit. You can pick up a Burn Permit at either Station One (1310 17th Ave) or Station Two (360 George Roy Pkwy.) If you have questions, you can contact the Fire Dept by email or by calling at 668-3518. There are times of the year when burning in Shelby County is prohibited. These prohibitions are established by ADEM (Alabama Dept of Environmental Management.) Read Municipal Code, Chapter 7, Article IV

4. What information should I give the call taker when I call 9-1-1?

What type of emergency do you have, the location of the emergency, Try to keep it short, but remember stay on the line until the call taker says you can hang up. Remember, stay calm! If they can't understand you, they can't help you.

5. A fire truck, ambulance, or police car is approaching with its lights and sirens on .... What should I do?"

When an emergency vehicle approaches you with its lights and sirens on, when it is safe to do so, pull to the right and stop even if you are in the left hand lane. If it is not safe to do so, stop where you are and wait for all the emergency vehicles to pass. Don't pull into an intersection if you are at a traffic light or stop sign. Please be courteous, remember the emergency we're responding to may be yours. BE SAFE!

6. I have seen a fire truck with its lights and siren on go through an intersection .... then turn its lights off, .... Why?"

This is more than likely because the call was a multiple unit response and another arriving unit radioed back to the others that either their response wasn't necessary or doesn't warrant the dangers of running with lights and sirens.

7. Can I have someone from the fire department check my blood pressure?

Yes, stop by the station during normal business hours, and someone will be happy to take your blood pressure.

8. How should I plan for a disabled family member during a fire?

Assure that you have a well-defined escape plan. Make sure that people who are confined to a wheelchair have immediate access to their wheelchair when an emergency occurs.

9. Can I use a fire hydrant in Calera to fill a pool?

No, you cannot use a hydrant to fill a pool. Your domestic house water system must be used for this purpose

10. Why do I have to dial 9-1-1? If I call the fire station direct would it save time?

The firefighters might not be at the station when you call. Even if they are, the firefighters will still have to activate 9-1-1 so that other emergency responders are notified. On the other hand, the 9-1-1 emergency system is designed to save valuable seconds. When you dial 9-1-1, the system routes the call to the police or fire unit that is closest to your home. Only call the fire station with non-emergency business.

12. What kind of fire extinguisher should I buy for my home?

Homeowners should buy an extinguisher that can handle Class A-B-C fires. This type of extinguisher is designed to extinguish fires that usually occur in homes including wood, paper, flammable liquids, and electrical fires.

13. Why do fire engines respond to car accidents, even when they didn’t look serious?

The Calera Fire Department responds to all accidents where there is suspected injury to occupants of the vehicle. When a call is received at the 911 Communications Center, quite often the caller does not know if any injuries have occurred as a result of the accident. Even minor accidents cause “whiplash” or other injuries. Sometimes, the reason for the accident is a medical condition that caused the operator to lose control of their vehicle. To that end, all accidents are considered serious and require a response of medical personnel.

The Fire Department also has a stake in the protection of the environment. The department supervises the clean-up of fuels, oils and coolants that may affect our natural resources.

1. What do I do if I smell gas?

If you think you smell gas, do not turn off / on any electrical appliances including light switches. Leave your home immediately. Make a call to us from a neighbor’s house or a cell phone outside of your residence, away from the smell of gas. Call (205) 668-3500 24/7 and someone will come out to investigate the smell for you.

3. How do I read my gas meter?

Here are a few simple rules:
•Read each dial in the direction shown by the arrows.
•If the dial hand is between the numbers, use the lower one (if between 9 and 0, read 9).
•If the dial hand is exactly on a number, look at the dial to the immediate right. If its dial hand is not past zero, record the lower number for the dial in question.
•While the number of dials on your meter may vary, the procedure for reading them is the same.

1. What do I do if I have an outstanding warrant against me?

You must turn yourself in to the Calera Police Department. You will be able to post bond (except in violation of probation cases) as soon as the Police Department concludes the booking process. Bond may be posted in cash or through a professional bonding company.

You can obtain a copy of your report by coming by our police records office at the Calera Police Department  (10947 Hwy 25). Hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 am and 5:00 pm. If you witness or hear of activity you suspect to be a crime or suspicious activity, there are several ways you can report this without fear of being identified. All information received will be dealt with by its own merit. The Police Department will not take action on unsupported information; however that does not mean that the matter will not be reviewed. You can contact the police at (205) 668-3505. Your identity is not crucial in all cases however for us to be effective with your concerns, we may need to contact you if we have questions.
