The city of Calera is pleased to announce that the long-awaited second storm shelter has been approved and construction will begin soon. The shelter, which has been a much-needed addition to the community, will provide a safe haven for residents during severe weather events.
Thanks to the philanthropy group, Rising Eagle, the project has been made possible through their efforts to raise approximately $70,000 of the $160,000 required for construction. The City Council voted unanimously at the council meeting on Monday night to fund the remaining $90,000 needed to begin construction. Mayor Jon Graham expressed his gratitude towards Rising Eagle and the City Council for their commitment to this project. Other partners in this endeavor include Calera Bible Baptist Church and Argos USA, LLC.
The second storm shelter will be located on the south side of the city, providing easy access for residents in that area. It will have a capacity of approximately 100 people, and the shelter will be equipped with basic amenities such as a restroom and emergency supplies. It will be located at the intersection of 22nd Avenue and Shady Lane (across from the Calera Housing Authority).
The construction of the storm shelter is expected to take approximately six months to complete, and the City of Calera will be working closely with the contractor to ensure that the project is completed efficiently and on time.
The addition of this second storm shelter is a significant step forward in ensuring the safety of the residents of Calera during severe weather events. The city does hope to build a shelter on the north side of Calera soon to serve citizens on that end of town as well. The City Council is committed to the safety and well-being of its citizens, and this project is just one of the many ways they are working to achieve that goal.
